Chapter 17: The arc of sighting
The chapter that brings everything together to answer whether the new moon will be seen. From the true positions of sun and moon the Rambam derives the first longitude and latitude, gives quick limits that settle clear cases, and then corrects step by step, for the difference between where the moon is and where it appears, for the swerve of its circuit, and for the latitude of the country, to arrive at the arc of sighting. He sets out the limits that decide visibility, works the full example for the eve of 2 Iyar, and closes with a reflection on the moon's complexity and on the sources of this wisdom.
1Everything we have set out so far was so that it would be ready and prepared for determining the sighting. When you want to determine it, begin calculating: work out the sun's true position, the moon's true position, and the position of the head, for the time of sighting. Subtract the sun's true position from the moon's true position. The remainder is called the first longitude [the elongation].
2Once you know the position of the head and the position of the moon, you know how much the moon's latitude is and whether it is northern or southern. This is called the first latitude.
Keep careful track of this first longitude and first latitude, and have both of them ready before you.
3Look at this first longitude. If it comes out to 9° or less, you know for certain that the moon cannot possibly be seen that night anywhere in the Land of Israel, and you need no further calculation.
If the first longitude is more than 15°, you know for certain that the moon will be seen throughout the Land of Israel, and you need no further calculation.
If the first longitude is between 9° and 15°, you need to investigate through the calculations of the sighting until you know whether or not it will be seen.
4When does this apply? When the moon's true position is between the beginning of Capricorn and the end of Gemini. But if the moon's position is between the beginning of Cancer and the end of Sagittarius: if the first longitude is 10° or less, you know the moon will not be seen at all that night anywhere in the Land of Israel; if the first longitude is more than 24°, it will certainly be seen throughout the borders of Israel; and if the first longitude is between 10° and 24°, you need to investigate through the calculations of the sighting until you know whether or not it will be seen.
5These are the calculations of the sighting. Look and see which sign the moon is in.
| Moon's sign | Subtract from the first longitude |
|---|---|
| Aries | 59' |
| Taurus | 1° |
| Gemini | 58' |
| Cancer | 52' |
| Leo | 43' |
| Virgo | 37' |
| Libra | 34' |
| Scorpio | 34' |
| Sagittarius | 36' |
| Capricorn | 44' |
| Aquarius | 53' |
| Pisces | 58' |
What remains of the longitude after you subtract these minutes is called the second longitude.
6Why are these minutes subtracted? Because the moon's true position is not the place where it is seen. There is a difference between them in longitude and in latitude, which is called the change of appearance [parallax]. The change of appearance in longitude at the time of sighting is always subtracted from the longitude, as we said.
7But the change of appearance in latitude: if the moon's latitude is northern, subtract the minutes of the change of appearance in latitude from the first latitude; if the moon's latitude is southern, add them to the first latitude. Whatever the first latitude is after these minutes are added to it or subtracted from it is called the second latitude.
8How many minutes are added or subtracted?

| Gemini | 16' |
| Cancer | 27' |
| Leo | 38' |

| Libra | 46' |
| Scorpio | 45' |
| Sagittarius | 44' |

9Once you know these minutes, subtract them from the first latitude or add them to it, as we taught you, and you have the second latitude. You already know whether it is northern or southern; find how many degrees and minutes this second latitude has come to, and have it prepared and ready before you.

10Then take a portion of this second latitude, because the moon swerves slightly in its circuit. How much is the portion you take?
| Moon's position (either range) | Take of the second latitude |
|---|---|
| Aries 0°–20° Libra 0°–20° | two fifths |
| Aries 20° – Taurus 10° Libra 20° – Scorpio 10° | a third |
| Taurus 10°–20° Scorpio 10°–20° | a quarter |
| Taurus 20° – end Scorpio 20° – end | a fifth |
| Gemini 0°–10° Sagittarius 0°–10° | a sixth |
| Gemini 10°–20° Sagittarius 10°–20° | half a sixth |
| Gemini 20°–25° Sagittarius 20°–25° | a quarter of a sixth |
| Gemini 25° – Cancer 5° Sagittarius 25° – Capricorn 5° | nothing, since there is no swerve there |
| Cancer 5°–10° Capricorn 5°–10° | a quarter of a sixth |
| Cancer 10°–20° Capricorn 10°–20° | half a sixth |
| Cancer 20° – end Capricorn 20° – end | a sixth |
| Leo 0°–10° Aquarius 0°–10° | a fifth |
| Leo 10°–20° Aquarius 10°–20° | a quarter |
| Leo 20° – Virgo 10° Aquarius 20° – Pisces 10° | a third |
| Virgo 10° – end Pisces 10° – end | two fifths |
The portion you take from the second latitude is called the moon's circuit.
11Then look again at the moon's latitude and see whether it is northern or southern. If it is northern, subtract this moon's circuit from the second longitude. If the moon's latitude is southern, add the circuit to the second longitude.
When does this apply? When the moon's position is between the beginning of Capricorn and the end of Gemini. But if the moon is between the beginning of Cancer and the end of Sagittarius, it is the reverse: if the moon's latitude is northern, add the circuit to the second longitude, and if it is southern, subtract the circuit from the second longitude. Whatever the second longitude is after you add to it or subtract from it is called the third longitude. Know that if there is no swerve of the circuit, and the calculation gives nothing to take from the second latitude, the second longitude itself is the third longitude, no less and no more.
12Then look at this third longitude, which is the degrees between the moon and the sun, and see which sign it is in:
| Third longitude in | Adjust the third longitude by |
|---|---|
| Pisces or Aries | adding a sixth of it |
| Aquarius or Taurus | adding a fifth of it |
| Capricorn or Gemini | adding a sixth of it |
| Sagittarius or Cancer | nothing; leave it as it is |
| Scorpio or Leo | subtracting a fifth of it |
| Libra or Virgo | subtracting a third of it |
Whatever the third longitude is after you add to it, subtract from it, or leave it as it is, is called the fourth longitude.
Then go back to the moon's first latitude and always take two thirds of it. This is called the correction for the height of the country [its geographic latitude].
Look and see: if the moon's latitude is northern, add the correction for the height of the country to the fourth longitude; if the moon's latitude is southern, subtract it from the fourth longitude. Whatever the fourth longitude is after this is subtracted or added is called the arc of sighting.

13For example: we come to investigate whether or not the moon will be seen on the night of Friday, the second of Iyar of this year. Work out the sun's true position, the moon's true position and the moon's latitude for this time, as we taught you. The sun's true position comes out at 7°9' of Taurus. The moon's true position comes out at 18°36' of Taurus. The moon's latitude comes out southern, 3°53'; this is the first latitude. Subtract the sun's position from the moon's position, and 11°27' remain; this is the first longitude.
Since the moon was in Taurus, the change of appearance in longitude is 1°, which is to be subtracted from the first longitude. The second longitude comes out 10°27'. Likewise the change of appearance in latitude is 10'; since the moon's latitude was southern, this change of appearance of 10' is to be added to it. The second latitude comes out 4°3'. Since the moon was at 18° of Taurus, you are to take a quarter of the second latitude; this is called the moon's circuit. The moon's circuit at this time comes out 1°1', since the seconds are not calculated precisely.
14Since the moon's latitude is southern, and the moon's true position is between the head of Capricorn and the head of Cancer, the circuit is to be added to the second longitude. The third longitude comes out 11°28'. Since this longitude is in Taurus, a fifth of it, which is 2°18', is to be added to the third longitude. The fourth longitude comes out 13°46'. We went back to the first latitude and took two thirds of it; the correction for the height of the country comes out 2°35'. Since the latitude was southern, the correction for the height of the country is to be subtracted from the fourth longitude, and 11°11' remain. This is the arc of sighting on this night.
In this way you can work out and know how many degrees and minutes the arc of sighting has on any night of sighting you want, always.
15After this arc comes out, consider it. Know that if the arc of sighting is 9° or less, the moon cannot be seen anywhere in the Land of Israel.
If the arc of sighting is more than 14°, the moon cannot fail to be seen and will be visible throughout the Land of Israel.
16If the arc of sighting is from the beginning of the tenth degree to the end of the fourteenth degree, compare the arc of sighting with the first longitude, and you will know from its limits whether or not the moon will be seen. These are called the limits of sighting.
17These are the limits of sighting. If the arc of sighting is from more than 9° to the end of 10°, or more than 10°, and the first longitude is 13° or more, it will certainly be seen. If the arc is less than this, or the longitude is less than this, it will not be seen.
18If the arc of sighting is from more than 10° to the end of 11°, or more than 11°, and the first longitude is 12° or more, it will certainly be seen. If the arc is less than this, or the longitude is less than this, it will not be seen.
19If the arc of sighting is from more than 11° to the end of 12°, or more than 12°, and the first longitude is 11° or more, it will certainly be seen. If the arc is less than this, or the longitude is less than this, it will not be seen.
20If the arc of sighting is from more than 12° to the end of 13°, or more than 13°, and the first longitude is 10° or more, it will certainly be seen. If the arc is less than this, or the longitude is less than this, it will not be seen.
21If the arc of sighting is from more than 13° to the end of 14°, or more than 14°, and the first longitude is 9° or more, it will certainly be seen. If the arc is less than this, or the longitude is less than this, it will not be seen. Here the limits end.
Two numbers decide it. The first longitude is the plain distance between the true sun and the true moon; the arc of sighting is what is left of that after four corrections — for where the moon is seen from rather than reckoned from, for its wandering in latitude, for the angle its path makes with the horizon in that sign, and for the latitude of Eretz Yisrael. Nine degrees of arc or less and it cannot be seen; over fourteen and it cannot be missed. Between, the staircase: the taller the arc, the less elongation it needs.
22For example: we come to examine the arc of sighting for the night of Friday, the second of Iyar of this year. The calculation gave us an arc of sighting of 11°11', as you know. Since the arc of sighting was between 10 and 14, we compared it with the first longitude. You already know that the longitude on this night was 11°27'.
Since the arc of sighting was more than 11°, and the first longitude was more than 11°, it is known that the moon will certainly be seen on this night, according to the set limits. Do the same with every arc and its first longitude.
23You have already seen from these workings how many calculations it involves, how many additions and how many subtractions, and this after we labored greatly to find approximate methods whose calculation has no great depth. For the moon has great twists in its circuits. That is why the Sages said: "The sun knows its setting" (Psalms 104:19), but the moon does not know its setting.
And the Sages said: sometimes it comes by a long path and sometimes by a short one. As you see from these calculations, sometimes you add and sometimes you subtract until the arc of sighting comes out, and sometimes the arc of sighting is long and sometimes short, as we explained.
24The reasoning behind all these calculations, why this amount is added and why that one is subtracted, how each of these things came to be known, and the proof for each of them, belongs to the science of astronomy and geometry. The sages of Greece wrote many books on it, and these are the books now in the hands of the scholars.
But the books written by the Sages of Israel of the tribe of Issachar, who lived in the time of the prophets, have not reached us. Since all these matters rest on clear proofs that have no flaw, and no one can question them, we are not concerned about who the author was, whether prophets wrote them or gentiles. For anything whose reasoning has been revealed and whose truth is known through flawless proofs, we do not rely on the person who said it or taught it, but on the proof that was revealed and the reasoning that was made known.
