Chapter 14: The moon's mean motion
פרק ידThe moon's mean motions. The moon has two: the mean position of its small sphere around the world, and its mean course on that small sphere. The Rambam gives the daily rate and multiples of each and their positions at the epoch, then a seasonal adjustment that fixes the mean moon for the time of sighting, about a third of an hour after sunset.

The moon rides a small sphere, which is carried round the earth on a large one, each turning at a fixed rate (14:1–3). At the far point 1 the two motions subtract and the moon is slowest; at the near point 2 they add and it is fastest. The difference is the correction for the course, at most 5°8' (15:6).
The corrected model adds chapter 15's step: the course is counted from a point that moves with the double distance, and the faint moon shows where the plain model would have put it.

1The moon has two mean motions. The moon itself revolves in a small sphere that does not surround the world, and its mean motion in that small sphere is called the mean course. The small sphere itself revolves in a large sphere that surrounds the world, and this mean motion of the small sphere within the large sphere that surrounds the world is called the moon's mean position. The moon's mean position moves 13°10'35" in one day.

2So its motion is:
| Days | Remainder |
|---|---|
| 10 | 131°45'50" |
| 100 | 237°38'23" |
| 1,000 | 216°23'50" |
| 10,000 | 3°58'20" |
| 29 | 22°6'56" |
| 354 (a regular year) | 344°26'43" |
In this way you can multiply for any number of days or years you want.

3The mean course moves 13°3'54" in one day. So its motion is:
| Days | Remainder |
|---|---|
| 10 | 130°39' |
| 100 | 226°29'53" |
| 1,000 | 104°58'50" |

4The remainder of its motion in a regular year is 305°0'13". At the beginning of the night of Thursday, which is the epoch for these calculations, the moon's mean position was 1°14'43" of Taurus. At this epoch, the mean course was 84°28'42". Once you know the motion of the moon's mean position and the mean that serves as the epoch to add it to, you can find the moon's mean position on any day you want, the same way you did for the sun's mean position. After you have worked out the moon's mean position for the beginning of the night you want, look at the sun and find which sign it is in.

5If the sun is between the middle of Pisces and the middle of Aries, leave the moon's mean position as it is. If the sun is between the middle of Aries and the beginning of Gemini, add 15' to the moon's mean position. If the sun is between the beginning of Gemini and the beginning of Leo, add 30' to the moon's mean position. If the sun is between the beginning of Leo and the middle of Virgo, add 15'. If the sun is between the middle of Virgo and the middle of Libra, leave the moon's mean position as it is. If the sun is between the middle of Libra and the beginning of Sagittarius, subtract 15' from the moon's mean position. If the sun is between the beginning of Sagittarius and the beginning of Aquarius, subtract 30'. If the sun is between the beginning of Aquarius and the middle of Pisces, subtract 15'.
The moon's mean is reckoned for the start of the night; the moon is looked for about twenty minutes after sunset. How far apart those are depends on the season, so the Rambam corrects the mean by where the sun stands — nothing at either equinox, half a degree at the solstices, in fifteen-minute steps.
6Whatever the mean position is after you add to it, subtract from it, or leave it as it is, that is the moon's mean position about a third of an hour after sunset at the time you are working it out for. This is called the moon's mean position at the time of sighting.
