Chapter 12: The sun's mean motion

The sun's mean motion. The Rambam gives its daily rate and its motion over 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000 days, 29 days and a regular year, then introduces the apogee, the highest point of the sun's sphere, and its slow motion. With the positions of both at the epoch, he shows how to find the sun's mean position on any day, works an example for the eve of 14 Tammuz, and explains how to move the epoch to any other year.

The sun moves evenly about the centre of its sphere, 59'8" a day (12:1). Its radius, carried out to the mazalot, gives its mean position: at the epoch 7°3'32" of Aries, with the apogee, the point of the sphere farthest from the earth, at 26°45'8" of Gemini (12:2). The earth is off the centre (drawn larger than life), so this is not yet where the sun is seen; that is chapter 13.

1The sun's mean motion in one day, that is, twenty-four hours, is 59'8". So its motion is:

DaysRemainder
109°51'23"
10098°33'53"
1,000265°38'50"
10,000136°28'20"

From 1,000 days on, this is what remains after you cast out every 360°, as we explained.

In this way you can multiply and work out its motion for any number you want. Likewise, if you want to prepare known signs for its motion over two days, three, four, and so on up to ten, you may. And if you want ready signs for its motion over twenty days, thirty, forty, and so on up to a hundred, you may. This is plain and obvious, once you know the motion of one day.

It is worth having ready and known the mean motion of the sun for 29 days, and for 354 days, which is the number of days in a lunar year whose months are in order. That year is called a regular year.

Once you have these means ready, the calculation for the sighting of the moon becomes easy for you. From the night of one sighting to the night of the sighting of the next month is 29 whole days, and so in every month, no less than 29 days and no more [counting from one of these to the other], since the only aim of all these calculations is to know the sighting.

Likewise, from the night of sighting of this month to the night of sighting of the same month in the next year is a regular year, or a year and one day; and so every year.

The sun's mean motion is:

2There is one point in the sphere of the sun, and likewise in the spheres of the rest of the seven planets, such that when the planet is at it, it is as high above the earth as it ever gets. For the sun and the other planets except the moon, that point revolves at a uniform speed, about one degree in every seventy years.

This point is called the apogee.

The apogee of the sun moves one and a half seconds every ten days, the half second being thirty thirds. So its motion is:

We have already said that the epoch from which this calculation begins is the beginning of the night of Thursday, whose day is the third of Nisan of the year 4938 from creation. At this epoch, the mean position of the sun was 7°3'32" of Aries. The position of the sun's apogee at this epoch was 26°45'8" of Gemini.

When you want to know the sun's mean position at any time you choose, take the number of days from the beginning of the epoch day up to the day you want, and work out the sun's mean motion for those days from the signs we gave. Add it all to the epoch, adding each kind to its own kind. The result is the sun's mean position for that day.

For example: we want to know the sun's mean position at the beginning of the night of Shabbat whose day is the fourteenth of Tammuz of this year, the year of the epoch. We find that the number of days from the epoch day to the beginning of this day is 100. We took the mean motion for 100 days, 98°33'53", and added it to the epoch, 7°3'32". The calculation gives 105°37'25".

So the sun's mean position at the beginning of this night is in Cancer, at 15° into it and 37' into the sixteenth degree.

The mean found by this calculation will sometimes fall exactly at the beginning of the night, or an hour before sunset, or an hour after sunset.

Do not be concerned about this for the sun in the sighting calculation, because we make up for this approximation when we calculate the moon's mean position.

Do the same at any time you want, even after a thousand years: add up all the remainders and add them to the epoch, and you will have the mean position.

Do the same for the moon's mean position and for that of every planet. Once you know its motion in one day and know the epoch to start from, add up its motion for all the years and days you want, add it to the epoch, and you will have its mean position.

Do the same for the sun's apogee: add its motion in those days or years to the epoch, and you will have the position of the sun's apogee for the day you want.

Likewise, if you want to make yourself another epoch to start from, other than the one we started from in this year, so that it falls at the beginning of a known cycle year or at the beginning of a century, you may. And if you want your epoch to be from years before this epoch, or some years after it, the method is known.

What is the method? You already know the sun's motion in a regular year, its motion in 29 days, and its motion in one day. It is known that a year whose months are complete is one day longer than a regular year, and a year whose months are deficient is one day shorter than a regular year.

A leap year whose months are in order is 30 days longer than a regular year. If its months are complete, it is 31 days longer than a regular year. If its months are deficient, it is 29 days longer.

Since all these things are known, work out the sun's mean motion for all the years and days you want and add it to the epoch we made. You will have its mean position for the day you want in years to come, and you can make that day an epoch. Or subtract the mean motion you worked out from the epoch we made, and you will have the epoch for the day you want in past years; make that mean position an epoch. Do the same for the mean position of the moon and the other planets, if they are known to you. It is already clear from all we have said that just as you can know the sun's mean position for any day you want in the future, so you can know it for any day you want in the past.
