Chapter 11: Introduction to the astronomy
Here the astronomical part of the laws begins. The Rambam explains why he sets out the court's methods for predicting the sighting of the new moon even though they are not needed today, and what degree of precision he aims for. He then lays the groundwork: the division of the circle into degrees, minutes and seconds, the twelve signs of the zodiac, adding and subtracting arcs, and the difference between a body's mean and true motion. He closes by fixing the epoch every later calculation starts from, and the region around Jerusalem the method is built for.

1We said in these laws that the court would calculate precisely and know whether or not the moon would be seen. So we know that anyone of settled mind, whose heart longs for matters of wisdom and to understand their secrets, will want to know the methods by which they calculated, so that a person can know whether or not the moon will be seen on a given night.
2These methods of calculation are the subject of great disputes among the ancient sages of the nations who investigated the calculation of the seasons and geometry. Great and wise men went wrong in them; things escaped them and doubts arose for them.
Some worked very precisely and still did not find the right method for calculating the sighting of the moon. They dove into mighty waters and came up holding a shard.
3Over a long time, and through much testing and investigation, the methods of this calculation became known to some of the sages.
We also have, on these principles, traditions from the Sages and proofs that were not written in the books known to everyone. For all these reasons I have seen fit to explain the methods of this calculation, so that they will be ready for anyone whose heart moves him to approach this work and do it.
4Do not take these methods lightly because we have no need of them in our time. These methods are far-reaching and deep; they are the secret of the intercalation that the great sages knew and did not hand over to everyone, only to ordained men of understanding. But the calculation used when there is no court to fix the months by sighting, which is the one we calculate by today, even schoolchildren can master in three or four days.
5Perhaps a sage of the nations, or a sage of Israel who has studied Greek wisdom, will examine these methods I use for calculating the sighting of the moon, see a slight approximation in some of the steps, and think that it escaped us and that we did not know the step was approximate. Let him not think so. Wherever we did not calculate precisely, it is because we know from the principles of geometry, with clear proofs, that the difference does not spoil the determination of the sighting and need not be considered. That is why we were not precise there.
6Likewise, where one of the steps appears to fall slightly short of the value proper to it, we did this deliberately, because there is a matching excess in another step. So the result comes out true by approximate methods, without a long calculation. This is so that a person not used to these matters is not overwhelmed by many calculations that are of no use in the sighting of the moon.
7These are the principles a person must know before any astronomical calculation, whether for the sighting or for other matters:
The sphere is divided into 360 degrees. Each sign of the zodiac is 30 degrees, and the count begins from the start of the sign of Aries. Each degree is 60 minutes [חלקים]; each minute is 60 seconds; each second is 60 thirds. You can refine the calculation this way and divide any amount of time as far as you want.
8So if your calculation shows that a certain star is at 70°30'40" of the sphere, you know that the star is in Gemini, halfway through the eleventh degree of that sign. For Aries is 30 degrees and Taurus is 30, leaving ten and a half degrees of Gemini, plus 40 seconds of the last half degree.
9Likewise, if its position comes out at 320 degrees, you know that the star is in Aquarius, at its twentieth degree. Do the same with every value.
The order of the signs is: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.
10In all these calculations, when you add one remainder to another or one amount to another, add each kind to its own kind: seconds with seconds, minutes with minutes, degrees with degrees. Whenever the seconds add up to 60, make it one minute and add it to the minutes. Whenever the minutes add up to 60, make it one degree and add it to the degrees. When you add up the degrees, cast them out in 360s; what is left, 360 or less, is what you take for the calculation.
11In all these calculations, when you want to subtract one amount from another, and the amount being subtracted is larger than the amount it is subtracted from, even by one minute, add 360 degrees to the amount you are subtracting from, so that the subtraction becomes possible.
12For example: the calculation requires you to subtract 200°50'40" from 100°20'30". Add 360 to the 100, making 460 degrees. Begin by subtracting seconds from seconds. You come to subtract 40 from 30, which is impossible. So take one minute from the 20 minutes, make it 60 seconds and add it to the 30, giving 90 seconds; subtract the 40 and 50 seconds remain. Now subtract the 50 minutes from 19 minutes, since you already took one minute from them and made it seconds. It is impossible to subtract 50 from 19, so take one degree from the degrees, make it 60 minutes and add it to the 19, giving 79 minutes; subtract the 50 and 29 minutes remain. Now subtract the 200 degrees from 459 degrees, since you already took one degree and made it minutes; 259 degrees remain. The result is 259°29'50". Do the same with every subtraction.
13The sun and the moon, and likewise the rest of the seven planets, each move in their own sphere at a uniform speed, neither faster nor slower: as it moves today, so it moved yesterday, and so it will move tomorrow and every day.
The sphere of each of them, though it surrounds the world, does not have the earth at its center.
14So if you measure the motion of each of them against the sphere that surrounds the world with the earth at its center, which is the sphere of the zodiac, its course varies. Its motion in the zodiac today will be less or more than its motion yesterday or tomorrow.
15The uniform motion with which a planet, the sun or the moon moves in its own sphere is called the mean motion.
The motion measured in the sphere of the zodiac, which is sometimes more and sometimes less, is the true motion. By it the true position of the sun or of the moon is found.
16We have already said that the methods we are explaining in these laws are only for calculating the sighting of the moon.
So we made the epoch [the fixed starting point] from which this calculation always begins the beginning of the night of Thursday, whose day is the third of Nisan of this year. This year is the seventeenth year of the 260th cycle, the year 4938 from creation, the year 1489 of the Era of Contracts [the Seleucid era], and the year 1109 since the destruction of the Second Temple. We call this year the year of the epoch for this calculation.
17Since the sighting takes place only in the Land of Israel, as we explained, we built all the methods of this calculation on the city of Jerusalem and the places around it within about six or seven days' journey, where the moon is always watched for and from which people come and testify before the court.
This region lies north of the equator, the line that runs around the middle of the world, by about 32 degrees, ranging up to 35 and down to 29. It also lies west of the middle of the inhabited world by about 24 degrees, ranging up to 27 and down to 21.
