Chapter 7: Fixing Rosh Hashanah
Chapter 7 turns the molad of Tishrei into the day on which Rosh Hashanah is fixed. Rosh Hashanah is never on Sunday, Wednesday or Friday; a molad at noon or after moves it to the next day; and two thresholds, one for an ordinary year and one for the year after a leap year, move it on further in certain years. The Rambam closes by explaining all of these through the difference between the mean conjunction and the true one.
1By this calculation, Rosh Chodesh Tishrei is never fixed on Sunday, on Wednesday or on Friday [known by the sign ADU, אד"ו: days 1, 4 and 6].
Rather, when the molad of Tishrei falls on one of these three days, Rosh Chodesh is fixed on the day after it.
For example: if the molad was on Sunday, Rosh Chodesh Tishrei is fixed on Monday; if the molad is on Wednesday, Rosh Chodesh is fixed on Thursday; and if the molad is on Friday, Rosh Chodesh is fixed on Shabbat.
2Likewise, if the molad is at noon or after noon, Rosh Chodesh is fixed on the day after it.
For example: if the molad was on Monday, 6 hours into the day or more than 6 hours, Rosh Chodesh is fixed on Tuesday.
If the molad is before noon, even by a single part, Rosh Chodesh is fixed on the very day of the molad, provided that day is not one of the ADU days.
3When the molad is at noon or after noon and Rosh Chodesh is put off to the next day, if that next day is one of the ADU days it is put off to the day after that, and Rosh Chodesh is fixed on the third day counting from the day of the molad.
For example: if the molad was on Shabbat at noon (7:18), then in a year whose molad is like this Rosh Chodesh is fixed on Monday. Likewise, if the molad was on Tuesday at noon or after noon, Rosh Chodesh is fixed on Thursday.
4If by this calculation the molad of Tishrei comes out on the night of Tuesday, at 9 hours into the night and 204 parts of the tenth hour (3:9:204), or later: if it is an ordinary year, Rosh Chodesh is put off, and in this year it is fixed not on Tuesday but on Thursday.
5Likewise, if the molad of Tishrei comes out on Monday, at 3 hours into the day and 589 parts of the fourth hour (2:15:589) [3 hours into the day is 15 hours from the start of the night], or later: if that year follows a leap year, so that the year just before it was a leap year, then in this year Rosh Chodesh is fixed not on Monday but on Tuesday.
6If the molad of the ordinary year that we said is put off to Thursday was one part less, for example if it came out 3:9:203 or less, it is fixed on Tuesday.
Likewise, if the molad of the year after a leap year was one part less, for example 2:15:588 or less, it is fixed on Monday.
So the way to fix Rosh Chodesh Tishrei by this calculation is this: calculate and find on which day the molad will be, at how many hours of the day or of the night, and at how many parts of the hour.
The day of the molad is always the day it is fixed on, unless: the molad was on Sunday, Wednesday or Friday; or the molad was at noon or after noon; or it was at 204 parts of the tenth hour of the night of Tuesday or later, and the year was ordinary; or the molad was at 589 parts of the fourth hour of Monday, and the year was an ordinary year following a leap year. If one of these four things happens, it is not fixed on the day of the molad but on the day after it, or the day after that, as we explained.
7Why is it not fixed on the ADU days by this calculation? Because this calculation is for the conjunction of the moon and the sun by their mean motion, not by their true position, as we have made known. So they made a day of fixing and a day of postponing, in order to meet the day of the true conjunction.
That is: on Tuesday we fix, on Wednesday we postpone; on Thursday we fix, on Friday we postpone; on Shabbat we fix, on Sunday we postpone; on Monday we fix.
8The basis of the rest of these four postponements is the same principle we stated: that this calculation is by the mean motion.
The proof of it: the molad may be on the night of Tuesday and be put off to Thursday, and many times the moon is not seen on the night of Thursday; and not only that, but not on the night of Friday either. This shows that the sun and the moon did not truly join until Thursday.
